Gold $5.00 Liberty Head Coins Minted from 1839-1908 Collectors love the $5.00 Liberty series. They are one of two coins in our nation's history minted at all seven branches of the U.S. Mint. In fact, the $5 Liberty is the first gold coin struck as official legal tender of the United States. Often referred to as a "Half Eagle" it was first struck in 1795– and minted through 1907. Classic Design - Christian Gobrecht's design with a Liberty head encircled by stars was introduced in 1839. The 13 stars represents the first 13 colonies. The reverse is a majestic Eagle with outstretched wings encircled with "United States of America" and "Five D." In 1866 the motto "In God We Trust" was added in a flowing banner. A Unique and Rare Mintage - The "Liberty Head" five dollar gold coin is one of only two coins in our nation’s history to have been minted in all seven of the United States Mints. These classics are quite rare, especially examples from the Pre-Civil War Era. Southern Branch Mints - The U.S. Mint struck $5 Liberty gold pieces in extremely low mintages at brand mints in Dahlonega, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. If you're starting to acquire U.S. gold coins, the $5 Liberty series is an ideal gold coin for both collectors and investors. We recommend you start with the highest grades and rarest dates you can afford. |
