In 1907 when Saint-Gaudens gold pieces were first minted, they were struck with detailed, high relief. This historic gold coin is often described as looking more like a miniature sculpture than a gold coin.

In fact, no other gold coin in American history has been designed with these unique, raised, high relief features.

For this reason alone, the 1907 dated $20 Saint Gaudens are clearly the most fascinating and beautiful creations ever struck by the U.S. Mint.

Production of the Saint-Gaudens high relief series required 9 strikes from a special hydraulic coin press. It took over 172 tons of pressure to bring up the high relief features. Sadly, the high cost of producing such a gold coin for mass production were prohibitive.

An Extremely Limited Mintage
No sooner had the U.S. Mint struck and released the first 11,250 coins than production was halted. The high relief Saint-Gaudens design was lowered to permit more efficient minting and to make the coins easier for banks to stack and count.

A Coin for Collectors Who Deserves the Very Best
New dies were created and the Roman date MCMVII was converted to traditional 1907 numbers. Because so few were originally minted, the total surviving number of 1907 High Relief Saint Gaudens graded by both PCGS and NGC are extremely low.
