1799-MO-FM Mexico 2 Escudo - About Uncirculated 58 (NGC)

The 1799-MO-FM Mexico 2 Escudo is a remarkable gold coin from the late 18th century, representing the rich history of Spanish colonial coinage in Mexico. This coin, minted during the reign of King Charles IV (Carlos IV), exemplifies the craftsmanship and historical significance of the period.

This coin is truly rare as one of only 8 certified in all grades by NGC.  Five exist in this grade with none finer.  It appears to us the coin was double struck on the obverse, a sort of mint-made error as the lettering and details seem to be doubled.  Very interesting coin for the money.

Obverse Design:
The obverse of this 2 Escudo features a finely detailed right-facing bust of King Charles IV. The surrounding inscription reads “CAROL.IIII.D.G.” (Carlos IV, by the Grace of God) on the left side, with “HISP.ET.IND.R.” (King of Spain and the Indies) on the right. The date "1799" is prominently displayed at the bottom. The intricate engraving of the bust and the well-preserved details highlight the coin’s exceptional condition in About Uncirculated 58, certified by NGC.

Reverse Design:
On the reverse, the Spanish coat of arms is prominently displayed, symbolizing the authority and reach of the Spanish Empire. The denomination markers "2" and "S" flank the shield, indicating the coin’s value of 2 Escudos. Encircling the shield are the Latin inscriptions “IN.UTROQ.FELIX” on the left and “AUSPICE.DFO.FM” on the right. These inscriptions, translating to “Happy under both (worlds)” and “Under the auspices of God,” further emphasize the coin’s historical and cultural significance. The reverse design, with its detailed coat of arms and Latin text, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of Spanish colonial power.

Condition and Certification:
This 1799 2 Escudo is preserved in About Uncirculated 58 condition, as certified by NGC. The coin exhibits minimal wear, sharp details, and a beautiful gold luster, making it a prized example of colonial-era coinage. The NGC certification guarantees its authenticity and grade, ensuring it meets the highest standards for collectors.

Historical Significance:
Minted in Mexico City, the heart of Spanish colonial minting operations, this 2 Escudo is a testament to the importance of gold coinage in the economic and political landscape of the time. The "MO" mint mark signifies its origin from the Mexico City Mint, while "FM" identifies the assayer responsible for maintaining the coin's weight and purity standards.

This 1799-MO-FM Mexico 2 Escudo is more than just a currency; it is a tangible link to a pivotal era in global history. Its exceptional condition and certification make it valuable to any serious collection of Spanish colonial coins.
