1856 Hand on Book | Mexico 8 Escudo | NGC MS63
Struck at the Culiacán Mint in 1856, this 8 Escudo gold coin captures the revolutionary spirit of 19th-century Mexico. Certified by NGC in Mint State 63, it's a remarkably preserved example of the first large gold issue of the Mexican Republic.
The reverse features the iconic Mexican eagle, facing forward with wings partially spread, clutching a snake in its beak and talon. The eagle perches on a cactus, a powerful national symbol, encircled by the inscription “REPUBLICA MEXICANA.”
On the obverse, a radiant liberty cap rises from an open law book, held aloft by a hand and mounted on a staff. This symbolic image powerfully blends ideals of liberty and rule of law. The legend reads “LA LIBERTAD EN LA LEY”, with the denomination 8 E and the mintmark C, for Culiacan. The assayer’s initials C.E. and the gold fineness are also clearly struck.
With its sharp detail, rich golden luster, and well-centered strike, this MS63 example stands among the finest survivors of this rare issue. It represents a critical moment in Mexican history when ideals of liberty, reform, and national identity were being minted into gold. Only 24 of these have ever been certified with this MS63 being one of four in the grade with just two known better.
Now available at Austin Rare Coins & Bullion, this is a stunning acquisition for any advanced Latin American or world gold collector.
