This exquisite 1857 San Francisco Double Eagle originates from the SS Central America shipwreck, famously known as the "Ship of Gold." Each coin has undergone meticulous curation to enhance its innate allure and has been officially certified and graded by PCGS to achieve a Mint State 64 condition. To safeguard the intricate details of these coins, they are securely encased in specially crafted PCGS holders.

Furthermore, every holder contains a trace of gold dust salvaged from the shipwreck. Bob Evans, the esteemed Chief Scientist and overseer of the discovery has personally endorsed the PCGS grading certificate, affirming its authenticity as a genuine relic from the salvage mission. Our inventory of these coins is extremely limited, and each piece is presented in a distinctive collector's box as depicted in the accompanying imagery.

The San Francisco Mint produced a total of 970,000 coins in 1857, with many having been lost or destroyed over time. Double Eagles of superior caliber, such as those retrieved from the SS Central America, are highly coveted by collectors.

In August 1857, the SS Central America embarked on a journey from San Francisco to New York with more than 400 passengers and crew on board. Dubbed the "Ship of Gold," it carried a substantial amount of gold nuggets and bars from the California Gold Rush, alongside newly minted $20 gold coins produced at the San Francisco mint in 1856 and 1857. In September, while navigating the Carolina coast, the vessel was engulfed by a severe hurricane, leaving it helpless against the elements. In a matter of hours, the ship, along with its precious cargo and hundreds of passengers, succumbed to the relentless forces of the storm, sinking to the ocean floor where it lay undisturbed for 130 years. The recovery of gold coins from the SS Central America has garnered immense interest from collectors and investors globally, owing to their remarkable history, exceptional quality, and attractive pricing. Austin Rare Coins & Bullion takes pride in being among the select dealers authorized to offer the extraordinary treasures salvaged from the depths of the SS Central America.
