1891 Zacatecas, Mexico| 10 Pesos | MS-64
This 1891 Mexico 10 Pesos, struck in .875 fine gold, stands out for its rare and symbolic reverse design. Graded Mint State 64 by NGC, it exhibits vibrant luster, sharp detail, and excellent surface preservation—making it one of the finest examples known from the Zacatecas Mint. In fact, only 14 examples have ever been certified from a low mintage of 1,930 coins--and just one is finer than the current example.
The reverse features the classic Mexican eagle devouring a snake while perched on a cactus, surrounded by the legend "REPUBLICA MEXICANA". This powerful national emblem represents triumph, independence, and resilience.
The obverse, however, is where this coin truly sets itself apart. A radiant Liberty cap is placed prominently in the center, with bold sunburst rays emanating behind it—a nod to the ideals of enlightenment and freedom. Below the cap rests a finely engraved scale, symbolizing justice, and at the base, a scroll inscribed with "LEY DIEZ PESOS 875", representing the denomination and gold content. The artistry and layout offer a strong blend of visual appeal and patriotic symbolism.
Issued during the presidency of Porfirio Díaz, this coin reflects Mexico’s economic modernization and growing global presence in the late 19th century. Its rare reverse design makes it especially appealing to collectors of Latin American gold coinage and fans of Liberty-themed imagery.
