1936 Gettysburg Commemorative Half Dollar NGC MS65
The 1936 Gettysburg Commemorative Half Dollar was struck to commemorate the Battle Of Gettysburg that took place in July of 1863. Between 45 and 50,000 soldiers died in the battle, a staggering number the costliest battle in US history.
The Gettysburg Half Dollar is one of the most popular commemorative coins ever struck by the US Mint because of its historical context and unique design. Each coin in this release is pedigreed from the “Gettysburg Hoard” which contained over 500 high-grade examples acquired directly from the Gettysburg Foundation to raise money to offset losses from the Covid-19 pandemic.
There are three different grades of coins in the release, ranging from Mint State 64 up to gem-quality Mint State 66. The obverse features both a union and a Confederate soldier, while the reverse shows two shields, representing the Union and Confederate armies.
