1987 | Gold American Eagle | 2-Coin Proof Set

Each set includes all original government packaging (OGP)-- encapsulated coins in velvet booklet, and accompanied with matching box and certification.

Each year the US Mint issues Gold American Eagles in two distinct versions, bullion and proof. Both versions have the same designs, but several key differences. Bullion coins have the basic, even finish of higher-production coins, primarily trade upon their gold weight, and are delivered in basic packaging.

In contrast, Proof Gold American Eagles have a gorgeous, two-tone finish with matte design features against a reflective background, have much lower mintage figures, and come in special display boxes made by the US Mint that include a certificate of authenticity. Of course, these special features also mean that they cost more than their bullion counterparts, and every year the new issue commands a significant premium when the mint releases them to the public.

With that in mind, we watch for opportunistic phases in the gold market and recommend Proof Gold Eagles when they can be acquired for a reasonable premium over bullion Eagles. At such low prices, they're an excellent opportunity and, eventually, many of our clients take advantage of a second opportunity by trading the Proofs back in for bullion coins when proof premiums run to the high end of their trading range. To illustrate this point, for most of 2023, Proof Gold American Eagles were trading dealer to dealer at an $850 per ounce premium over spot!

1987 is the only year the US Mint issued a two-coin Gold Eagle Proof Set featuring just 1-oz. and 1/2-oz. sizes and only 143,398 were made. After that, the sets were expanded to four coins, making the 1987 set a limited, one-year only issue. In addition, it’s the only set with one West Point coin (see the “W” mintmark on the 1-oz) and one Philadelphia coins (indicated by no mintmark on the 1/2-oz). These items are subject to rapid price fluctuations and sudden supply issues. Act now to take advantage of current market dynamics.
