The U.S. Mint’s beautiful Gold American Eagle design was borrowed from the striking $20 Saint-Gaudens which was immediately popular upon its introduction in 1907. It remains in high demand today by investors and enthusiasts as its ideal combination of eye appeal, age, and large size (.9675-oz) offers bullion characteristics plus the added advantages of the Pre-1933 U.S. Gold Market:
- Greater upside potential due to a fixed and limited supply
- Additional privacy and safety than bullion coins and bars
- Almost 1-oz. of gold = highly responsive to increasing gold price
These characteristics entice even gold investors who traditionally “just want bullion” but see $20 Saints as “100-year-old Gold Eagles” and a smart addition to their modern gold.
Third-party grading and certification is critical and entrusted to only two companies, PCGS and NGC, who seal coins in plastic “slabs” as pictured. All “MS” coins are “mint-state”, or uncirculated, quality followed by a specific number in the 60s. MS-63 to MS-66 represents “Investment-Grade” and higher grades tend to be better performers.
