"Proof" refers to a special, limited edition version of American Eagles with a spectacular two-tone finish made of matte design features contrasting the flashy, reflective background and the famous "W" mint-mark for West Point.

Keep in mind that Proof refers to the finish and not the quality. While all coins are very high-quality directly from the Mint, only those graded, certified and sealed by the industry's top grading companies, NGC or PCGS, are known to be in perfect Proof-70 grade as indicated on their accompanying grading certificate.
