Honor the 100th Anniversary of the First Year of the Peace Dollar

The Morgan Silver Dollar and the Peace Silver Dollar are among the most iconic coins in all of American history. In 1921, after a sixteen-year hiatus, the Morgan Dollar was returned for a single issue. In the same year, the first Peace Dollar, celebrating the armistice that ended WWI, was struck. In honor of 2021 being the 100th anniversary of the first Peace Silver Dollar, the United States Mint has released The 2021 Peace Silver Dollar. This coin was created through the use of modern technology and historical U.S. Mint assets.

The 2021 Peace Silver Dollar features the same designs and was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and, just like the vintage US Peace Dollars struck there over 100 years ago, has no mint mark. Austin Rare Coins & Bullion, an industry leader in rare and vintage coins, is honored to offer the unique reissue of one of the most historic US coins. Collecting this coin is a great way to honor the numismatic contributions and history of the Peace Silver Dollar.

The History of The Peace Silver Dollar

In December 1921, the new Peace Dollar was approved by the United States Treasury, replacing the Morgan Dollar and marking peace between the U.S. and Germany following World War 1. More than one million Peace Dollars had been struck by the end of the year at the Philadelphia mint facility. It is likely that the Pittman Act of 1918 played a key role in the creation of the Peace Dollar. The Pittman Act authorized the melting down of over 300 million stored silver dollars and the selling of the bullion to the British Empire to help them cover the deficit that resulted from the war. As a result, the US Mint sat on millions of ounces of silver bullion. Minting the silver bullion into dollars allowed more silver certificates to be put into circulation, which is why the Morgan Silver Dollar was reissued that year.

Eventually, a lobby formed asking the U.S. Mint to strike a coin that symbolized the peace reached after WWI ended. Though Congress did not act on the coin redesign through legislation, the designs for the coin, which was the work of Italian American Sculptor Anthony de Francisci, were approved by the Treasury. The sculptor’s design was selected as the winner of a nationwide competition. de Francisci’s design featured his depiction of Lady Liberty on the obverse. de Francisci used his wife Teresa as a model for the design. The reverse features an eagle standing on a rocky outcrop, backlit by the sun, clutching an olive branch. The short-lived Peace Dollar series was struck from 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935.

Honoring History: The 2021 Peace Silver Dollar

For coin enthusiasts and collectors, the Peace Dollar is popular not only because of its limited mintage but also due to its historical significance and candid beauty. Because this coin was symbolic of peace following WWI, it is viewed as a true piece of American history. The Peace Dollar holds the significance of being the last dollar coin containing silver that was struck for circulation purposes. The rarity of Peace Dollars can also depends on the release year. In addition, some coins were struck with a high relief, and while it is believed that those coins have been melted down, one has surfaced. It is said that the 1921 Peace dollar is the closest to de Francisci’s original design, and while this coin may not be considered rare it does become difficult to obtain in upper mint-state grades. Most numismatists would agree that the 1928 edition is the rarest, with just over 360,000 minted for circulation.

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the first year of production of the Peace Dollar, the United States Mint released a 2021 commemorative version. This resulted from the 1921 Silver Dollar Commemorative Coin Act, which was signed into law in January 2021 and requires the striking of a legal tender Morgan Silver Dollar and Peace Silver Dollar. The 2021 version is almost identical to the 1921 coins. The 2021 Peace Dollar differs from its vintage ancestor only in that, instead of being struck in 26.73 grams of 90% fine silver, it has been minted in .858 troy ounces of highly pure 99.9% silver. The revived version also does not feature a mint mark. The coin is in its original Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition with razor sharp details. Only 200,000 Peace Silver Dollars from the Philadelphia Mint are being released. That is a considerably small mintage when you think of the many collectors throughout the world who collect Peace Silver Dollars. This coin is a must-have for any collector of historic US coins.
