The US Mint issues two versions of American Silver Eagles, a Business Strike and a Proof Version. The proof coins can easily be distinguished from their Business Strike counterparts due to their beautiful, highly-mirrored, two-tone appearance and their famous “W” mint-mark indicating they were struck at the West Point Mint.

Proof coins start with a polished planchet to create the reflectivity. A mint official then walks the proof coins through the striking process resulting in a final product with a flawless appearance.

Proofs typically trade for a substantial amount to the business strikes with far fewer being made which creates a more active secondary market for collectors and investors alike.
