A Brief History of the Peace Dollar
Find Your Peace DollarWhat is a Peace Dollar?
The Peace Dollar is a rare silver coin designed by Anthony de Francisci in 1921 and released in 1922 by the United States Mint. It was crafted to commemorate the peace after World War One, hence its name. In 1926, production of dollars ceased entirely due to a run on silver bullion from other countries, most notably China. During the Great Depression, production of the rare silver dollar ceased in 1933. During World War II, the United States refused to trade with anyone who possessed gold or silver that was not part of direct transactions between governments. This policy extended even to rare coins like the Peace Dollar.

In 1946, the rare silver dollar was reissued as a rare legal tender coin. In 1964, the Coinage Act of 1965 declared all rare United States Mint coins as either numismatic or bullion pieces and no longer considered legal tender currency. This is why Peace dollars are considered rare today. However, some rare peace dollars were released as part of the Mint’s annual coin sets. What makes Peace dollars unique is that they were minted in very low numbers and were not intended for everyday use. They are rare coins, which increases their value for collectors.
