AD 222-235 Roman Empire Severus Alexander Silver Denarius NGC About Uncirculated

Severus Alexander ruled the Roman Empire from AD 222 to 235, ascending to the throne at just thirteen years of age following the assassination of his cousin Elagabalus. His reign represented a period of relative stability and administrative competence during the tumultuous third century, with the young emperor guided initially by his grandmother Julia Maesa and mother Julia Mamaea. This silver denarius was struck at the Rome mint during his thirteen-year reign and bears the standard imperial portrait and titulature of the period.
The obverse displays a laureate bust of Severus Alexander facing right, draped and cuirassed in the classical imperial style. The legend IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG surrounds the portrait, proclaiming his imperial titles. The reverse depicts Mars standing right in military attire, holding a spear and resting his hand on a shield, with the legend P M TR P COS III P P indicating his tribunician power and third consulship. Both sides exhibit well-defined devices with complete legends visible around the flan.
Certified by NGC Ancients in About Uncirculated grade, this denarius displays attractive surfaces with light cabinet toning consistent with its age. The portrait details remain sharp, and the reverse figure of Mars shows strong definition throughout. Severus Alexander's coinage remains popular among collectors of Roman Imperial issues, representing an accessible entry point into third-century numismatics while commemorating one of the more capable rulers of this challenging era.
