This magnificent Gold Distater of Alexander III (the Great), struck during his lifetime or shortly after his death (336-323 BC), is a remarkable piece of ancient numismatic history. Weighing an impressive 17.12 grams, this coin represents the largest gold denomination issued under Alexander’s rule. Certified by NGC Ancients as Extremely Fine (Strike 5/5, Surface 3/5), it remains a well-preserved artifact from the height of Macedonian power.

Obverse: The obverse features the helmeted bust of Athena, the revered goddess of wisdom and warfare. Adorned with a griffin or other decorative elements, her helmet symbolizes strength, strategy, and divine protection—key attributes that defined Alexander’s legendary conquests.

Reverse: The reverse depicts Nike, the winged goddess of victory, gracefully holding a laurel wreath and a stylus, standing on a stylized base. To her side is the inscription ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ (ALEXANDROU), boldly declaring the authority of Alexander the Great. This imagery was a powerful statement of his military triumphs and the vast empire he forged from Greece to Egypt, Persia, and beyond.

Gold distaters were issued to reward elite soldiers and finance Alexander’s campaigns, which was crucial in spreading Greek culture worldwide. The Distater is known to be one of the most desirable gold coins of antiquity and is struck in an extremely high relief. NGC Ancients has certified only 70 examples in all grades combined, and only three of those have graded in mint condition.
