The Mysterious History of Roman Gold

When it comes to ancient Roman coins, Mint State Coson Gold Staters are always incredibly popular. If ancient mysteries are up your alley and you are interested in owning a unique piece of history, then this blog is for you. Keep reading to learn more!

The Theories

Over the years, two main theories have come to the forefront of discussion on the gold staters of King Coson. Although scholars have yet to determine a definitive reason for their creation, there are a couple of prevailing theories to consider. Let’s take a look.

Theory #1

The first theory purports that Brutus, a main conspirator against Julius Caesar, struck the coins using gold treasure provided by the Roman Senate. He then used the gold to pay troops provided by the Thracian King Coson to defend the Republic from forces loyal to Caesar.

Theory #2

The second theory (and the one that is generally considered to be less likely) surmises that the Coson Staters are nothing more than a gold version of a Roman silver coin of the time, also struck under Brutus.

A Bit of Information About These Coins

The obverse of these spectacular coins features three Roman consuls in procession with the inscription “KOSON” underneath. The reverse features a majestic eagle grasping a wreath atop an arrow. (If that sounds familiar, it’s because it looks very much like the back of the Indian Head Gold coins issued by the United States in the early 1900s.)

The other wonderful thing to note is that these coins have maintained a particularly high state of preservation of the course of the last two centuries. In other words, for a coin that is nearly 2,000 years old, these coins are in great shape and actually holding one in your hand is a rare treasure. No matter the type of collection you have, this coin is sure to become a highlight.
