If you’re an avid coin collector or even if you’re just getting started in numismatics, chances are you’ve already discovered that there’s a lot to learn.  Many people focus their efforts on the buying and selling of modern American coins. For instance, the American Eagle Coin is a popular favorite. However, technology and new standardized grading procedures have made it easier for more people to get involved with ancient coins.

History of Roman Coins

In the early times of the Roman Empire, as their borders began to grow, it became increasingly apparent that a different system was needed for the trade of goods and services. Before the invention of the first Roman coin, people would use lumps of bronze called Aes Rude. However, it still came with its share of problems considering that it was quite heavy and only available in a single denomination. Finally, around the 3rd century BC the first true Roman coin, also known as Aes Signatum, or “signed bronze”, was created.

There were many different types and denominations of Ancient Roman coins made from gold, silver, and copper. The As was the basic unit, similar to our penny. Other common denominations include the Dupondius, Sestertius, Denarius, Antoninianus, and Aureus. Of these, the most popular throughout almost all of Roman history was the Silver Denarius.

Roman Coins: More Than Just Money

The invention of Ancient Roman coins helped to facilitate commerce in an ever-expanding empire. However, they also served another purpose — to spread political propaganda. Unlike the early Electrum or Lydium coins, Roman coins featured images of emperors and important events. In fact, with each new ruler, a new type of coin would be designed to legitimize their position as ruler.
