The Krugerrand got its name from Paul Kruger, the first elected president of the South African Republic, and the African denomination, Rand. Kruger's likeness adorns the obverse of the coin while the national animal of South Africa, the springbok antelope, is shown on the reverse.

Each Krugerrand is brilliant-uncirculated and contains one troy ounce of gold plus a little copper to reduce wear and scratches, making them 22-kt.
