Silver American Eagle | Proof Coin
These beautiful Silver Eagle Proof Coins are easily recognized from bullion Silver Eagles due to their incredible shiny mirror-like finish and highly defined details. The attractive finish is a result of striking the coin multiple times on a highly polished planchet. Each proof coin contains 99.9% fine silver with the face value of $1. Its weight comes in at one troy ounce. You'll only find Proof American Eagle Silver Coins available in a one ounce size.
This coin actually has two designers to credit. The obverse was designed by Adolph A. Weinman and features Lady Liberty walking in full stride in front of the setting sun enveloped in folds of the U.S. flag. She has her right hand extended and in her left hand is holding branches of laurel and oak. "Liberty" encircles the upper half of the coin in capital letters and "In God We Trust" is engraved to the lower left of Miss Liberty.
The reverse was designed by United States Mint Sculptor/Engraver John Mercanti. In the middle you'll find a heraldic eagle with shield. In the eagles right talon there is an olive branch emphasizing the power of peace. Underneath the olive branch the coin bears a "W" mint mark meaning it was minted at the West Point branch of the United States Mint. The eagle's left talons are holding onto a group of 13 arrows symbolizing strength in unity. Inscribed circling the top of the reverse are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and circling the bottom is the size and face value of the coin "1 OZ. FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR."
